Huntington Beach football coach Brett Brown, who guided the Oilers to the playoffs the past three seasons, has resigned, Huntington Beach Union High School District athletic director Jim Perry confirmed Wednesday night.

Brown, who would have entered his 10th season this fall, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Huntington Beach finished 7-5 this past season. The team placed third in the Epsilon League and beat Western 56-39 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs before losing at Summit 45-14 in the quarterfinals.

In 2023, the Oilers advanced to the semifinals for the first time since their CIF-SS championship season of 2013. They lost at eventual Division 6 champion Simi Valley 32-29.

Brown mentored All-County quarterback Brady Edmunds the past two seasons. Edmunds earned first-team All-County this past fall and committed to Ohio State.

Edmunds excelled throwing to All-County juniors Troy Foster and Steel Kurtz.

Edmunds (6-5, 215), who already holds several school records, said late Wednesday that he is enrolled at Huntington Beach High.

Brown mostly guided Huntington Beach in the challenging Sunset League. He led the school to the playoffs six times in his tenure and finished with a record of 39-56.

The Oilers went 18-18 the past three seasons.

Brown served as Huntington Beach’s quarterback coach and offensive coordinator before replacing Eric Lo for the 2016 season.
