Officials investigate 5 new deaths, totaling 16 lives lost in Palisades, Eaton fires

In a somber update on Saturday evening, officials with the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner (DME) announced 5 new Eaton Fire-related deaths.

This brings the number of lives lost in the Palisades and Eaton fires to 16.

Within only four days since the fires first broke out, DME reported five deaths have occurred as a result of the Palisades Fire, and 11 as a result of the Eaton Fire.

The five new cases reported to DME are still under investigation – the department said it cannot confirm human remains until after they are processed at the facility.

According to the DME, two of the five new fatalities were uncovered on Jan. 10. One was found in the 800 block of East Sacramento Street, and the other was found in the 100 block of West Terrace Street – both in Altadena.

Both of the above victims are currently at the DME, as of 6 p.m. Saturday.

The other three fatalities were discovered in Altadena on Jan. 11. One was found in the 3000 block of Krenz Avenue, one in the 200 block of Wapello Street and one in the 30 block of West Pine Street.

The last three victims are awaiting DME response, the department reported.

Out of the 16 lives lost, only one has been publicly identified by the department: 66-year-old Victor Shaw, who, according to loved ones, died from the Eaton Fire with a hose in his hand, trying to defend the home that had been in his family for nearly 55 years.
