Mater Dei girls water polo sinks Orange Lutheran for first Santa Barbara tournament title

<p><em>Support our high school sports coverage by becoming a digital subscriber. <a href=”https://checkout.ocregister.com/subscriptionpanel”>Subscribe now</a></em></p><hr /><p>Kirra Pantaleon scored four of her match-high five goals in the third period to help Mater Dei’s girls water polo team pull away from Orange Lutheran for a 10-7 victory in the finals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Saturday.</p><p>The Trinity League rivals entered the second half tied 5-5 but Pantaleon’s shooting helped the Monarchs take a 9-6 lead into the fourth quarter at Santa Barbara High.</p><p>Pantaleon, a junior attacker, was selected tournament MVP as Mater Dei (11-1) captured the event for the first time.</p><p>Mater Dei goalie Sienna Sorensen, who had seven saves in the final, also was named all-tournament.</p><p>The Monarchs and Orange Lutheran (12-2) weren’t full-strength for the championship match <a href=”https://www.ocregister.com/2025/01/08/mater-dei-girls-water-polo-seeded-first-for-santa-barbara-tournament-of-champions/”>due to player commitments for an upcoming U.S. national team trip</a>.</p><p>Allison Cohen and Jailynn Robinson of Orange Lutheran and Maggie Ryan of Mater Dei were expected to miss the final because of travel to Greece for a World Cup tournament.</p><p>In the semifinals, Ryan netted six goals and Delaney Hook added three as Mater Dei defeated San Marcos 12-7.</p><p>Orange Lutheran beat Newport Harbor 11-7 in the other semifinal behind two goals apiece from Cohen, Robinson and Estelle Karaba. Goalie Kyla Pranajaya made six saves.</p><p>Karaba and Michelle Urkov earned all-tournament honors for the Lancers, who were the defending tournament champion.</p><p>Newport Harbor (15-3) bounced back to defeat San Marcos 11-2 in the third-place match behind eight saves by Lydia Soderberg.</p><p>Sophomores Emerson Mulvey and Gabby Alexson received all-tournament honors for the Sailors.</p><p>In the seventh-place match, The Bishop’s edged Foothill 12-11 in sudden-death overtime. Chloe Patist scored four goals to pace the Knights.</p><p>In the ninth-place match, Laguna Beach defeated Corona del Mar 10-6 for its first victory in three games against the Sea Kings. Ava Guziak scored three goals for the Breakers.</p><p>Mater Dei built momentum for the Santa Barbara TOC by <a href=”https://www.ocregister.com/2025/01/04/mater-dei-girls-water-polo-knocks-off-orange-lutheran-on-the-way-to-holiday-cup-title/”>capturing the Bill Barnett Holiday Cup last weekend</a>.</p><p>
