(KTLA) – California National Guard troops arrived overnight to assist with road closures as firefighters continue working to slow the spread of the massive Eaton Fire burning in Los Angeles County Friday.
Video showed troops deployed in Altadena providing reinforcement so L.A. sheriff’s deputies could be freed up to patrol neighborhoods and deter any possible looters. At least 20 people have already been arrested for looting inside evacuation zones during the recent outburst of wildfires.
Meanwhile, crews continue working to slow the progress of the 13,960-acre fire that advanced on Mount Wilson Thursday afternoon. Firefighters managed to keep the flames from damaging any of the critical broadcast infrastructure, officials said.
The blaze, which started Tuesday amid hurricane-force winds near Altadena Drive and Midwick Drive in the Altadena area, has burned an estimated 1,000 structures. Containment remained at 0% Thursday night.

Evacuation orders (red) and warnings (yellow), which are still in place for much of Altadena, Pasadena and the surrounding communities, can be viewed on the map above. An interactive map is available on the California.gov website.
Authorities are working diligently to get residents back into their homes as soon as possible but are asking for patience.
“It’s extremely dangerous. There’s still structural damage. There are open gas lines. There are downed power lines. We don’t want someone to expose themselves to these elements and we don’t want them to create an additional hazard to the first responders,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Meza said.
The following school districts previously announced they would remain closed Friday due to the Eaton Fire.
- Glendale Unified School District
- La Canada Unified
- Pasadena Unified School District
Several other school districts were closed on Thursday and could be shuttered Friday as well.
At least 10 deaths have been reported in the wildfires that have been roaring across Southern California.
