L.A. County to observe ‘Day of Mourning’ in honor of former President Jimmy Carter

Los Angeles County has declared Thursday, Jan. 9, as the official Day of Mourning in honor of late former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

The motion was approved by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday and coincides with the National Day of Mourning declared by President Joe Biden.

In Los Angeles County, all nonessential offices will be closed, including all county libraries; Los Angeles County Treasurer and Tax Collector; L.A. County Auditor Controller; L.A. County Parks & Recreation offices; and Los Angeles County Public Works’ administrative offices.

However, essential offices, like emergency crews and medical services, will remain operational.

Federal employees, except those who work in national security, defense or other essential public business, will also have the day off on Thursday.

President Biden also ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days from Dec. 29.

Carter, the longest-lived American president, served as the nation’s 39th president in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the Vietnam War. Many described him as an “extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian.”

After leaving office after one term, Jimmy and his wife Rosalynn Carter founded the Carter Center in 1982 as “a first-of-its-kind base of operations, asserting themselves as international peacemakers and champions of democracy, public health and human rights,” the Associated Press reported.

Jimmy Carter also won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

A state funeral is also scheduled for Thursday. Biden and several others are expected to deliver a eulogy. President-elect Donald Trump has said he would attend the funeral.
