LOS ANGELES (KTLA) — There are multiple large wildfires burning in Southern California Wednesday morning, fulfilling many people’s worst fears ahead of a powerful windstorm and dry conditions.
Officials from several Los Angeles County and city agencies provided an update on the various fires from downtown Los Angeles Wednesday morning, warning that local firefighting agencies are stretched to their limit.
“We’ve got fires throughout the entire county,” said L.A. County Board of Supervisors Chair Kathryn Barger.
Those fires include:
- Palisades Fire near Pacific Palisades
- Eaton Fire near Pasadena and Altadena
- Hurst Fire in Sylmar
- Woodley Fire near the Sepulveda Basin
In addition, the Tamarack Fire burned near Sun Valley, and in nearby Riverside County, the Tyler Fire is burning in Coachella.
More help is on the way from nearby counties in California and from nearby states, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Anthony Marrone.
The damage thus far
So far, the blazes have claimed lives, destroyed hundreds or thousands of structures, and injured many, officials said.
At least two people have been killed in the 2,200-acre Eaton Fire. Multiple injuries have been reported, and more than 100 structures have been destroyed.
Marrone said the 5,000-acre Palisades Fire has destroyed 1,000 structures and resulted in a “high number of significant injuries to residents who did not evacuate, in addition to first responders who were on the fire lines.”
In addition, the Tyler Fire has destroyed two homes.
Looking ahead
The destruction is expected to continue through Wednesday, and officials encouraged the public to remain vigilant, stay at home if possible, prepare to leave if need be and follow all directions from authorities.
“We are absolutely not out of danger yet,” Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley said.
