Three teenagers who were inside a vehicle fleeing from police were detained after leading police on a pursuit, and now authorities are citing the parents and requiring them to appear in court.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, a deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Toyota Avalon that was reported stolen in Apple Valley at 12:18 a.m. Monday.
The vehicle failed to yield at the site of the attempted stop – Yucca Loma Road and Apple Valley Road – and the deputy subsequently initiated a pursuit.
While being chased, the driver of the vehicle – later revealed to be a 14-year-old boy – failed to yield at controlled intersections, traveled at unsafe speeds and eventually crashed into two separate property fences near Yakima and Mohawk roads, SBSD said.
The site of the crash is approximately 3.5 miles from where the pursuit started.
After the collision, all three occupants of the Toyota fled on foot but were quickly apprehended. In addition to the 14-year-old driver, another 14-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were detained, SBSD confirmed.
The driver was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle and evading a peace officer. He was booked into the High Desert Juvenile Detention and Assessment Center.
The other two teens were arrested for possession of stolen property and released to their guardians. None of their names were released due to their ages.
“All parents and/or guardians of the juveniles were cited for parental responsibility and will be required to appear in court,” authorities said.
Anyone with information that could aid the ongoing investigation is asked to contact Deputy T. Bohannon with the Victor Valley Sheriff’s station by calling 760-552-6800.
