(KRON) — San Francisco native and comedian Ali Wong walked away a winner in Sunday’s Golden Globes. Wong won “Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television” for her Netflix special “Ali Wong: Single Lady.”
Wong beat out Jamie Foxx, Adam Sandler, Seth Meyers, Nikki Glaser and Ramy Youssef. She is the first female comedian to win in that category, according to Netflix.

Wong was honored as the best stand-up comedy performance of 2024 on television, according to the Golden Globes. In her nationally televised victory speech, Wong took the time to give love to her San Francisco roots, specifically San Francisco’s Punch Line comedy club.
“You know I come from San Francisco, and that’s where I started doing stand-up. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for all the stage time that I got there and all the practice I got to become a stand-up comedian,” Wong said. “I really want to thank Molly Schminke from the SF Punch Line comedy club.”
The special — which was filmed at The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles and premiered on Oct. 8, 2024 — was Wong’s fourth on Netflix. It was well-received by critics with an 86 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to the Golden Globes, Wong became the first stand-up comedian to sell out eight shows at San Francisco’s Masonic Theater.
Wong, 42, attended San Francisco University High School in Pacific Heights. Her 2019 Netflix film “Always Be My Maybe” takes place in San Francisco.
