(KRON) — The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) said its personnel rescued an adult from Ocean Beach on Saturday, just hours after reminding Bay Area residents about a high surf advisory still in effect.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the high surf advisory will remain in place until 3 a.m. Sunday for the Pacific Coast, excluding Monterey Bay.
SFFD said the report of the surf rescue came in at 2:08 p.m. Saturday at Ocean Beach near Great Highway and John F. Kennedy Drive.
Officials said an SFFD captain pulled the individual from the surf line. The victim is reportedly “okay,” according to SFFD, and was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Hours before the rescue, SFFD reposted the National Weather Service’s high surf advisory alert on social media, warning people to stay out of the water due to “dangerous swimming and surfing conditions.”
NWS said large breaking waves between 18 and 22 feet can be expected during the advisory period. They also warned that “sneaker waves can sweep across the beach without warning, pulling people into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches.”
NWS advised inexperienced swimmers to stay out of the water, adding that even experienced swimmers could face cold water shock.
