OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — An Oakland man wanted for the 2023 murder of his wife after she was found shot to death on Interstate 580 was arrested Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Golden Gate Division.
The shooting happened on Feb. 26, 2023 when officers from the CHP’s Oakland Area office responded to the report of an assault in progress at 1:30 a.m. on the Edwards Avenue offramp from eastbound I-580. When officers and medics arrived, they located a woman on the shoulder suffering from a gunshot wound who was pronounced dead at the scene.
CHP detectives soon identified Nathaniel McCowan as the main suspect. Almost two years into their investigation, charges were formally filed against McCowan on Thursday and an arrest warrant was issued the same day.

CHP said with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies, McCowan was arrested without incident at the Sky River Casino in Elk Grove. Detectives said he was taken to Alameda County and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
In a news release, the CHP Golden Gate Division thanked its investigative team for their dedication and relentless pursuit of the suspect. “This arrest is a great example of the teamwork necessary between law enforcement and prosecutors to hold suspects to answer for their crimes.”
