Fountain Valley boys wrestling team pursuing another CIF-SS championship

Fountain Valley’s boys wrestling team might be on the path to another CIF-SS championship season.

The Barons last month finished second in the Mann Classic at Marina. That is one of the bigger early-season boys wrestling tournaments in Southern California. Perennial power Buchanan of Clovis finished first.

Fountain Valley had four individual champions in the Mann Classic: Hunter Jauregui at 113 pounds, Brady Mercer at 132 pounds, Christian Stoeber at 165 and Khale McDonnell at 215 pounds.

The Barons won a second consecutive CIF Southern Section Inland Division championship last season. Jauregui was the CIF-SS Inland Division champion last season at 109 pounds. McDonnell was the Inland Division champ at 190 pounds.

Both are looking for bigger success this season.

“I have a better attitude toward my matches and my opponents now,” said McDonnell who signed with Oregon State, where his brother TJ wrestles. “I’ve been training harder so I have a lot more belief in my moves and my capabilities this year.”

Jauregui said he, too, understands that being physically prepared for a match is not enough.

“One thing I’m better at is my mentality,” Jauregui said. “Last year I fell short and that gave me an understanding of what I need to work on and what it takes to be the best.”

Fountain Valley wrestling coach Brad Woodbury is enthusiastic about this season for the Barons, who are No. 7 in the Calgrapper.com state team rankings.

“They’re a tough group,” Woodbury said. “Great kids who work very hard. It’s going to be exciting to see how this pans out at the end of the year.”
