SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Friday that Jing Zhuang Li was charged in connection with an apartment building attack on two elderly women in Chinatown, the day after Christmas. “There is no place for violence in our city,” DA Jenkins said in a news release.
The assault happened on Dec. 26 in a building located on the 600 block of Broadway.
According to court records, the DA said the 39-year-old Li allegedly hit an 87-year-old neighbor with a 17-inch-long metal wrench, and continued to strike several times after the victim fell down. DA Jenkins said when another tenant, a 69-year-old woman, spotted the incident and yelled at him to stop, the DA said she was also knocked in the head with the weapon.
The DA confirmed that both victims suffered significant injuries. The 87-year-old victim had “major bleeding and a fractured skull.” The 69-year-old victim had “a left wrist fracture, three rib fractures, a skull fracture, a concussion, three scalp lacerations that required extensive suturing, and a torn ear.”
Jenkins said Li is detained pending trial due to him being a public safety risk. Li is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 6 and faces several charges, including:
- two counts of attempted murder
- one count of mayhem
- two counts of elder abuse
- two counts of assault with a deadly weapon
- two counts of battery causing great bodily injury
- one count of first-degree burglary
The case remains an open investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Francisco Police Department tip line at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411, starting the message with “SFPD.”
