(KTLA) – California has increased leave payments for most workers caring for a new child or a sick family member.
Workers earning less than $63,000 a year can now receive up to 90% of their regular pay while on leave. Those who are above that threshold will receive 70% of their wages.
The increase applies to new claims filed on or after Jan. 1, 2025. Claims filed in 2024 won’t qualify for the new rates.
The changes stem from Senate Bill 951, authored by Sen. Maria Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles). The law aims to make it “significantly more affordable for workers to take time off for pregnancy, childbirth, recovery from illness or injury, or to care for seriously ill family members,” a news release said.
“SB 951 will ensure every California worker can afford to care for their family and themselves during life’s most important moments. I applaud Governor Newsom for signing my bill into law, which will allow middle and low paid workers to receive up to 90 percent of their wages when out on leave,” Durazo said in a statement. “This change will benefit millions of workers who have contributed to the program during their careers. This bill, which I was proud to introduce, is part of the historic work California is doing to expand equitable access to paid leave.”
Before the new changes, most workers only received up to 60% of their income from the state’s disability insurance program.
