(KRON) — Just hours into the new year, the Oakland Police Department responded to a fatal shooting and illegal sideshow activity, according to authorities. The Jan. 1 homicide follows a deadly New Year’s Eve in the city, which saw three people slain.
Police responded Wednesday at around 3:15 a.m. to the 2400 block of 24th Avenue on the report of a shooting. Arriving officers found a person suffering from a gunshot wound, authorities said. The victim succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Shortly before the deadly shooting, Oakland police were responding to illegal sideshow activity reported on the 900 block of West MacArthur Boulevard. Officers arrived on scene at around 3 a.m. and vehicles and spectators began to disperse, OPD said.
One vehicle was disabled by officers as it fled the area, police said. The vehicle was later located in the area of the Interstate 580 onramp at W MacArthur Blvd. and the driver was contacted by police. A firearm was located during the investigation, OPD said, and the driver was taken into custody.
On New Year’s Eve, a quadruple shooting at around 10:10 p.m. left one person dead, police said. In another incident at 7:15 p.m., a person was stabbed to death. Earlier Tuesday morning, one person was shot and killed in West Oakland, police said. The incidents remain under investigation.
