The new year is almost here, and with many celebrating with fireworks, air pollution is expected to rise in Southern California.
Through early Wednesday afternoon, air quality near Los Angeles could reach an unhealthy level due to fireworks, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District.
“Fireworks emit high levels of particle pollution (PM2.5 and PM10) as well as metal air pollutants, all of which can contribute to negative health effects,” the AQMD said in an alert.
A no-burn order is already in effect to try to limit pollution and another risk presented by fireworks: wildfires, which can be another “major source of fine particle pollution.”
A firework-sparked blaze could be very destructive, as the National Weather Service is warning of dangerous fire conditions for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
“Elevated to critical fire weather conditions across portions of LA and Ventura Co due to the combination of gusty Santa Ana winds, very low humidities, and dry fuels,” the NWS said on X, formerly Twitter.
A red flag warning has been issued for the San Gabriel, Santa Susana and Santa Monica mountains.
