(KRON) — A paddle boarder who went missing in the ocean off Half Moon Bay was found safe Monday after darkness had set in, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
The tense nighttime search operation began at around 7 p.m. after a woman reported that she and her husband had become separated while paddle boarding. The couple had set out into the ocean near Pillar Point Harbor at around sunset. Eventually, the wife said, she lost sight of her husband.
Coastside Patrol Bureau deputies responded to the harbor and began a search in the “pitch black, frigid waters of the Pacific Ocean,” the sheriff’s office said. Deputies were assisted by Coastside Fire Protection District, San Mateo County Harbor District and U.S. Coast Guard crews.
The missing paddle boarder was found a short time later on land, safe and unharmed, the sheriff’s office said. He was already on his way back to his car.
Following the potentially disastrous incident, the sheriff’s office reminded the community of the dangers of the ocean. Authorities stressed that people should avoid going in the water at night as visibility is poor and conditions are dangerous. “Be safe, be vigilant and respect the power of the ocean,” the sheriff’s office said.
