Authorities are searching for a hit-and-run driver involved in a deadly crash on the 101 Freeway in Camarillo early Tuesday morning.
A caller initially reported that a semi-truck and a car were involved in the incident just before 1 a.m. on the northbound side of the freeway near Carmen Drive, the California Highway Patrol stated.
Arriving officers determined the two vehicles involved were actually a black 2007 Lexus IS 250 and a gray 2010 Ford Mustang.
Witnesses told investigators that the Lexus was speeding in the northbound lanes when it swerved to the right and slammed into a concrete wall, causing the car to roll over and come to a stop in lanes.
Seconds later, the Lexus was struck by the Ford Mustaing, which careened into the guard rail in the center divider, the CHP stated.
The driver of the Lexus, identified as a 40-year-old man from Oxnard, was taken to Ventura County Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
“The driver of the Ford Mustang left the scene on foot immediately after the crash and is currently outstanding” the CHP stated.
Investigators have not determined if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash but urged the public to be careful with the New Year’s holiday arriving.
“As we approach the New Year, today’s tragic event serves as a reminder to all how valuable life truly is,” Lt. James Ferguson said. “We encourage everyone to plan ahead to ensure a safe night.”
