Newport Harbor boys basketball uses balanced scoring for win in Tustin tournament

Jack Berry was an All-Orange County boys volleyball player this past spring for Newport Harbor.

He is pretty good at basketball, too.

Berry scored 16 points with six rebounds and two blocked shots Thursday as Newport Harbor rolled to a 72-36 win over Live Oak of Morgan Hill on the first day of the Tustin Holiday Classic tournament at Tustin High.

Newport Harbor is 11-4 and ranked No. 20 in the Orange County Top 25. Live Oak is 5-4.

Berry, a 6-3 senior guard, was one of four Sailors in double-figure points Thursday. Gavin Guy scored 12 points with five rebounds, Nolan Payne scored 12 and Niko Salomon scored all 11 of his points including three 3-pointers in the third quarter. Nash McKown had 10 rebounds.

Berry made 8 of his 13 shots, most of them inside of 15 feet. He missed his one 3-point try. Berry, All-County boys volleyball second team last season, is very good at scoring inside not so much because he jumps high, which he does, but really it is because he springs into the air quicker than the other players around him.

Newport Harbor coach Bob Torribio said Thursday’s game was typical in that it was another balanced-scoring product and, he said, Berry as usual had much to do with that.

“I like how unselfish we are,” Torribio said. “It helps when your best player is that competitive and that unselfish.”

Newport Harbor led throughout the game. The Sailors had a 21-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 42-20 lead at halftime. They outscored Live Oak 26-6 in the third quarter.

The Tustin Holiday Classic continues Friday and Saturday with pool play and concludes Monday. Pool A teams are Edison, Grants Pass of Oregon, Laguna Hills and Tesoro. Pool B teams are Live Oak, Mission Viejo, Newport Harbor and Tustin.

Friday’s schedule is Mission Viejo vs. Newport Harbor, 3 p.m.; Laguna Hills vs. Grants Pass, 4:30 p.m.; Tesoro vs. Edison, 6 p.m.; and Live Oak vs. Tustin, 7:30 p.m.

Pool A and Pool B winners play in the tournament championship game Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Tustin High.

Also in the Tustin Holiday Classic

No. 18 Edison 68, Laguna Hills 55: Derick Johnson scored 23 points for the victorious Chargers (9-6).

Jayden Oei added 12 points for Edison.

Edison coach Josh Beaty said Johnson is beginning to play to his potential.

“He’s still coming back after two weeks off because of ankle injuries,” said Beaty, in his first season as Edison’s coach. “He’s just now getting into shape.”

Beaty coached last season at Fountain Valley. He also has coached at Crean Lutheran and Buena Park.

Tustin 61, Mission Viejo 51: Yuri Klines scored 14 points with eight rebounds for the Tillers (12-4).

Tustin’s Daniel Molina scored 12 points, all on his four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
