Fans of auto racing across Southern California have a chance on Saturday to celebrate one last day of racing at the famed Irwindale Speedway.
The last major auto racing track in Los Angeles County was set to close its doors for good on Saturday with a massive sendoff, the Irwindale Speedway Farewell Extravaganza.
Among the festivities are autograph signings, fireworks, traditional racing and of course, destruction derbies and auto soccer games.
Opened in 1999, the speedway was built after a series of other closures across the Southland, namely Riverside International Raceway and Ontario Motor Speedway. The track was a mainstay in the NASCAR racing world and was a popular destination for drag racing.
Tim Huddleston, the President of Irwindale Speedway & Event Center, told KTLA’s Erin Myers that the track is “one of the best racetracks in the country.”
“Many people call this the perfect racetrack,” he said. “They took the best of everything and made this one and it’s perfect.”
Huddleston said the track will be sent out “with a bang” on Saturday with the festivities.
The track will be bulldozed for an industrial park in the near future.
