SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Kara Swisher, a tech journalist who once described herself as the “liberal lesbian Donald Trump of San Francisco,” has reportedly floated a plan to but the Washington Post with a group of rich people. Except one, that is. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is not invited.
Swisher, speaking to Axios, said the was interested in rounding up a group of investors to buy the paper from current owner Jeff Bezos. Swisher, who is based in San Francisco, began her career as an intern at the WaPo and later went on to work at the paper as a tech reporter.
“The Post can do better,” said the podcaster, author, journalist and CNN contributor to Axios. “It’s so maddening to see what’s happening. Why not me? Why not any of us?”
The Washington Post was criticized during the last election for failing to endorse a presidential candidate for the first time in decades.
This is not the first time there have been rumblings about Swisher wanting to buy the Post. In his fall newsletter, former CNN host Oliver Darcy reported that Swisher was interested in putting together a group of wealthy investors to buy the paper.
But while she’s out soliciting billionaires to potentially wrest the paper from Bezos’ grasp, one person she won’t be trying to get on board is Musk.
“Hopefully not Elon,” she told Axios, “though he seems pretty busy these days being President (Not) Elect.
One potential roadblock for Swisher, as pointed out by Axios, is that Bezos, who recently lost the title of “richest person in the world” to Musk, has shown no indication he is willing to sell the newspaper.
