(KRON) — A 34-year-old San Rafael man, Christopher James Butler, allegedly led police on multiple chases in stolen cars and drove the wrong-way on Bay Area freeways.
Butler evaded arrest for weeks, and his actions “endangered countless lives,” the San Rafael Police Department wrote.
During the investigation, Butler repeatedly evaded law enforcement by driving recklessly, including instances where he drove the wrong way on the freeway to evade arrest. His chases with police also included two times when he crashed two stolen vehicles and bolted out on foot.
“This type of reckless behavior endangers everyone on the road and is completely unacceptable,” said Lt. Scott Eberle.
The search for Butler ended Friday when officers found him at a local hotel. Butler arrived at the hotel in another stolen vehicle before officers took him into custody, police said.
“The safety of our community is our top priority, and we are relieved to have Butler in custody before his actions resulted in a tragedy,” Eberle said.
Butler was booked into jail on suspicion of reckless driving, evading police, vehicle theft, and outstanding warrants. He remains in custody on a no-bail warrant.
