An investigation has been opened by the FBI after a guest aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship died shortly after leaving the port of San Pedro in Los Angeles.
FOX 11 first reported the incident on Tuesday, after a person told the news outlet that a man aboard the ship, headed to Ensenada, Mexico, appeared to be “drunk and unruly.” The man allegedly threatened guests and attacked crew members.
The man, who the outlet identified as 35-year-old Michael Virgil, was later detained by crew members using zip ties and bear or pepper spray. The outlet reports that his family said security injected him with “some sort of sedative.”
Virgil died a short time after his detainment.
In a statement, Royal Caribbean confirmed the death:
“We are saddened by the passing of one of our guests. We offered support to the family and are working with authorities on their investigation.”
The company did not disclose the cause of death. Virgil was aboard the cruise with his son and fiancé.
No additional details were immediately made available.
