In the 2024 election, Orange County voters selected a mix of incumbents and fresh faces to serve on the county’s school boards.
A handful of the longtime board members have decades of experience, while the newcomers bring diverse backgrounds, spanning teaching, military, law and small business expertise.

Anaheim Elementary School District
• Area 1: Jackie Filbeck will be starting her third term on the board.
• Area 3: Julie Diep is a speech-language pathologist and disability rights advocate.
Anaheim Union High School District
• Area 3: Katherine Smith has served on the board since 1996.
• Area 4: Brian O’Neal, who has been a trustee since 2002, is a former La Palma City council member.
• Area 5: Ron Hoshi joined the Anaheim Union High School District in 1985, teaching at both Cypress High School and Kennedy High School.
Buena Park School District
• Area 3: Michael Jensen, an aerospace manager from Buena Park, defeated incumbent Tharwa Ahmad.
Capistrano Unified School District
• Area 1: Jennifer Adnams, a longtime educator, defeated the incumbent by nearly 2,000 votes.
• Area 2: Lisa Zollinger is a teacher and Ladera Ranch resident.
• Area 3: Lisa Davis was first elected to the board in 2020 to represent San Clemente.
• Area 5: Krista Castellanos will be starting her second term on the board.
Centralia School District
• Area 3: Angela Hernandez defeated Buena Park resident Thomas Barraza for her first term on the board.
Coast Community College District
• Area 2: Phu Nguyen, a newcomer to the board, is a Fountain Valley business owner and most recently served as a trustee on the Fountain Valley School District board.
Cypress School District
• Area A: Carrie Hayashida was appointed to the board in May to fill a vacancy following the resignation of Brian Nakamura.
• Area E: Jaime Needham, a former teacher in the Westminster, Irvine Unified and Cypress school districts, narrowly defeated incumbent Candi Kern by fewer than 100 votes.
Fountain Valley School District
• Incumbent Steven Schultz and newcomer Ashley Ramirez defeated Huy Tran in the race where voters were asked to choose two candidates.
Fullerton School District
• Area 2: James Cho, an Air Force veteran who serves on Fullerton’s infrastructure and natural resources advisory committee, defeated Hilda Sugarman, who was first elected to the board in 1996.
• Area 5: Vanesa Estrella, who owns El Pachuco Zoot Suits in Fullerton, defeated incumbent Leonel Talavera.
Garden Grove Unified School District
• Area 1: Terri Rocco, the incumbent, is a lifelong Garden Grove resident and retired district teacher.
• Area 5: Dina Nguyen, also an incumbent, is a Westminster attorney and former city council member.
Huntington Beach City School District
• Area 1: Brian Burley will be starting his first term on the board.
Huntington Beach Union High School District
• Area 3: Susan Henry has been a board member since 2000 and serves as a regional director for the California School Boards Association, representing Orange County.
Laguna Beach Unified School District
• Sheri Morgan and Howard Hills topped a field of five vying for two at-large seats, defeating incumbent Jan Vickers, who finished third. Morgan is a business owner and parent; Hills is an author and lawyer.
La Habra City School District
• Full Term: Justin Rodgers and Ofelia Corona Hanson are both incumbents.
• Short Term: Minerva S. Gomez is a planning commissioner in La Habra.
Los Alamitos Unified School District
• Area 4: Farnaz Pardasani, a newcomer to the board, is a member of the Los Alamitos Education Foundation.
• Area 5: Matt Bragman served on the district’s operations steering committee.
Newport-Mesa Unified School District
• Area 1: Leah Ersoylu won a second term by fewer than 500 votes.
• Area 3: Carol Crane, a former teacher most recently at Tarbut V’ Torah Community Day School in Irvine, is set to begin her second term.
• Area 6: Krista Weigand has been on the board since 2020.
North Orange County Community College District
• Area 2: Ed Lopez is an adjunct professor of political science at Irvine Valley College who has been on the board since 2016.
• Area 5: Mark Lopez was first elected to the board in 2018.
• Area 7: Ryan Bent is a Yorba Linda resident and public library commissioner who was first elected to the board in 2016.
Ocean View School District
• Incumbent Gina Clayton-Tarvin, who was first elected to the board in 2012, and Keri Gorsage, a teacher at The Pegasus School in Huntington Beach, topped a field of five vying for the two available seats.
Orange Unified School District
• Area 3: Ana Page, the incumbent, decisively won a second term.
• Area 4: Sara J. Pelly, a retired teacher, joined the board in May, replacing Madison Miner after she and Rick Ledesma were recalled by voters in March.
• Area 7: Stephen Glass replaced Ledesma in March.
Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District
• Area 1: Tricia Quintero, a longtime Placentia resident and new board member, is a teacher.
• Area 2: Marilyn Anderson will be starting her second term on the board.
• Area 3: Leandra Blades, the incumbent, serves on the Republican Party of Orange County Central Committee.
Rancho Santiago Community College District
• Area 3: Cecilia “Cici” Iglesias has served on the Santa Ana Unified School District board and the Santa Ana City Council.
• Area 5: David Crockett has been on the board since 2020.
• Area 7: Tina Arias Miller has been on the board since 2020.
Saddleback Valley Unified School District
• Area 2: Michele Sparks, a district parent, has volunteered in classrooms and served with parent-teacher associations.
• Area 3: Suzie Swartz was first elected to the board in 2020.
• Area 4: Amanda Morrell was appointed to the board in 2015 as a provisional trustee and won her first election in 2016.
Santa Ana Unified School District
• Area 1: Brenda Lebsack defeated incumbent Rigo Rodriguez by 201 votes.
• Area 2: Valerie Magdaleno, a lifelong Santa Ana resident, is a graduate of Lowell Elementary, Mendez Intermediate and Santa Ana High School.
• Area 3: Alfonso Alvarez will be starting his third term on the board.
South Orange County Community College District
• Area 1: Carolyn Inmon will be starting her second term on the board.
• Area 3: Lisa A. Bartlett, a longtime South Orange County resident and former Orange County Supervisor, will join six incumbents on the board.
• Area 6: Ryan Dack was first elected to the board in 2022.
• Area 7: Timothy “Tim” Jemal will be starting his fourth term on the board.
Tustin Unified School District
• Area 1: Allyson Muñiz Damikolas retained her seat for a second term on the board. Earlier this year, she ran for California’s 40th congressional district but lost in the March primary.
• Area 2: Kathy Copeland, new to the board, previously spent seven years serving on the Foothill High School Education Fund.
• Area 4: Jonathan Stone, the incumbent, is a longtime member of the Tustin Chamber of Commerce.
