BERKELEY, Calif. (KRON) — Strong offshore winds battered the Bay Area during the overnight hours between Monday and Tuesday. In Berkeley, one huge tree couldn’t withstand its force as it crashed down and onto a home.
The tree toppled at around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and split the residence’s roof open like a knife. While people may have been sleeping inside the house at the time, fortunately, no one was hurt.
The wind damage was evident in other parts of the city as well. Another tree fell on a parked pickup truck. No one was hurt in that incident, either. Heavy winds also knocked over restaurant heaters, which are often left outside in the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts up to 40 to 50 miles per hour were reported overnight in the Bay Area for the highest elevations. The wind will diminish during daytime hours on Tuesday.
