Nolan Arenado traded to the Dodgers or Angels? Not likely

DALLAS — St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado is likely to be traded – his club went to the rare step of admitting they’re trying to move him. While there has been speculation that the Dodgers and Angels might both be a fit for the Orange County native, it looks like neither team might actually be his destination.

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes shot down the rumors indirectly Monday by saying that Max Muncy was going to be their third baseman in 2025. It was in response to Muncy suggesting on a podcast that he’d move positions to accommodate a new third baseman.

“Munc has obviously been a huge part of us,” Gomes said Monday. “Munc, he’s gonna play third base for us. He’s such a big piece of what we do, and it’s been a staple. So Max is playing third base.”

As for the Angels, they are open to getting another third baseman to replace Anthony Rendon – or at least take his spot when he’s injured.

Arenado has a no-trade clause, and agent Joel Wolfe said Tuesday that his client would only waive his no-trade clause to go to “a team that he thinks is going to win now and consistently for the remainder of his career.”

Geography would not be a priority for Arenado, Wolfe said.

“Not anymore,” Wolfe said. “He wants a team that has the throttle down. I’m not saying that the Cardinals don’t, but (Arenado is looking for a team) that he believes he can jump right in and they’re gonna win right now.”

The Angels lost 99 games in 2024, and they have not had a winning season since 2015. They have not made the playoffs since 2014.
