The Long Beach Police Department has released bodycam footage from an intense gunbattle that left a man dead and an officer injured last month.
The shooting took place on Nov. 19 around 5:45 p.m., after about two-and-a-half hours of police attempts to de-escalate a potential hostage situation outside of a church in the area of the 5200 block of Atlantic Avenue.
The suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Brandon Boyd, remained uncooperative. Eventually, police said, Boyd and four officers exchanged gunfire.
Boyd was pronounced dead at the scene on the steps of Iglesia del Cristo Miel Church.
An officer was also shot in the arm and was treated at a hospital. That officer is expected to make a full recovery.
Boyd fired the first shots of the exchange, police claim.

The footage released by police on Saturday showed one of the officers firing shots in the direction of Boyd. Dozens of shots can be heard in the background, as Boyd himself fired from the steps of the church.
The shooting remains under investigation by police. It’s also undergoing an independent investigation by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The investigations are designed to determine whether officers use lawful force in fatal killings of suspects. No determination has been made on this particular case as of Sunday morning.
