SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — The annual Christmas tree lighting in downtown San Jose kicked off another season of ‘Christmas in the Park’ at Cesar Chavez Plaza Friday with thousands in attendance.
The tradition has been going on for more than 40 years. However, organizers of the nonprofit behind the event told KRON4 they are in need of more funding to keep the celebration alive for future generations, as key sponsors have pulled out.
“Some of our major donors have backed out,” said Debbie Degutis, managing director of Christmas in the Park. “We need about $100,000.”
Degutis explained that rising costs and dwindling support have created challenges, though she remains determined to continue the event.
“Depending on what comes in between now and March sets the tone for next year,” said Degutis. “We’re cutting back, not stopping. It just dictates the things we can do.”
Those interested in supporting the event can donate through red donation boxes located throughout Cesar Chavez Plaza. The park will remain open most days from the afternoon until 10 p.m.
