A wildfire that ignited on Thanksgiving Day and burned dangerously close homes in Riverside County grew significantly overnight.
The Canyon Crest Fire had scorched 250 acres as of 6 a.m. Friday, Cal Fire officials stated in an update.
The blaze started around 8 p.m. Thursday near Canyon Crest Drive south of the 60 Freeway in Riverside County as a 100 by-100-foot wind-driven spot fire.
“This fire started just south of the Riverside and San Bernardino county line and burned to the south towards and into Riverside County,” San Bernardino County Fire Department spokesperson Christopher Prater said.
Containment remained at zero percent as of Friday morning but officials are confident that will change.
“Throughout the day we are going to have a definite increase in control and containment and hopefully by this afternoon we’ll be able to give you some more updated numbers on that,” Cal Fire Battalion Chief Bryson Keener said Friday.
The blaze did burn near several homes Thursday evening prompting officials to issue an evacuation warning for the following area:
- North of 60 Freeway
- East of County Village Road
- South of Riverside/San Bernardino County Line
- West of Sierra Avenue

“If you are under an evacuation warning, be ready to go. Have your stuff ready. Have your important documents, your pets and have an evacuation route planned out just in case you are asked to go and evacuate,” spokesperson Prater said.
A care and reception center has been opened at Jurupa Valley High School located at 10551 Bellegrave Ave. in Jurupa Valley.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
