SF’s Glide Memorial upholds annual Thanksgiving tradition, serving those in need

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — It’s one of San Francisco’s biggest annual traditions — Glide Memorial Church’s annual Thanksgiving feast to help those in need. Volunteers at Glide in San Francisco’s Tenderloin have been busy Thursday serving up a festive meal featuring turkey, ham, and all the fixings.

To uphold the Thanksgiving tradition, volunteers began cooking more than 24 hours in advance to prepare thousands of meals. This year, Glide brought back its turkey drive after having to stop four years ago due to the pandemic.

This year is the first Thanksgiving the Glide community will celebrate since the death of its co-founder, Reverend Cecil Williams, who passed away in April at age 94.

While Thanksgiving is one of Glide’s main events, its kitchen feeds the community year-round.

“Glide is here every day and I always want to reiterate that we are here 364 days a year feeding our communities, supporting our communities, giving services and counseling to our communities, housing people in our community, and today, Thanksgiving is just a culmination of the love and the community,” said Glide President and CEO Dr. Gina Fromer.

Glide Memorial’s next holiday meal will take place on Christmas.
