Man gets 200 years to life in prison for 3 Oakland murders, other crimes

(BCN) — A 38-year-old man was sentenced to a total of over 200 years to life in prison for killing three people, the attempted murder of two other people and other crimes in Oakland dating back to 2009, according to Alameda County prosecutors.

Joseph Carroll got 197 years to life plus 10 years and four months in state prison for the deaths of Nguyen Ngo, Nehemiah Lewis, Andrew Henderson Jr., and the attempted murders of Deandre
Ware and Bao Ngo following a jury verdict, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement Tuesday.

During trial proceedings, prosecutors said Carroll murdered Nguyen Ngo in a drive-by shooting in Oakland on April 23, 2009. He also tried to kill Nguyen’s brother, Bao Ngo, who was injured in the shooting.

Carroll attempted to murder a man, identified as Ware, on May 3, 2010. On June 11, 2010, he shot and killed Lewis as the victim was exiting a car in Oakland.

Based on evidence and testimony, Carroll also murdered Henderson on April 13, 2011, in another drive-by shooting in Oakland.

District Attorney Pamela Price said the case revealed a “level and scope of violence that was outrageous and totally unacceptable in our county.”

“Unfortunately, no amount of time will heal the hurt inflicted on the families of the victims. The sentence does, however, reflect a need to protect public safety from this type of violence,” Price said.
