Sherman Oaks resident Adelita Lopez says she was at home watching TV on Wednesday night when her 2022 Kia Soul became engulfed in flames completely destroying her car, her neighbors’ cars and the entire carport.
“We ran outside and our car is on fire,” Lopez recounted to KTLA’s Angelie Kakade.
Lopez’s car was parked behind her apartment building on Fulton Avenue in Sherman Oaks, which lands within the vicinity that neighbors say has been targeted by suspected arsons.
“The captain said ‘We’re going to call it arson,’” said Lopez.
Wednesday’s fire is the latest in a string of fires in the neighborhood, including three vehicles and a building all within a mile radius of Fulton Avenue and Moorpark Street – and Lopez suspects her case is connected.
“It’s very scary It’s been very traumatic,” said Lopez. “It’s been a really rough couple of days.”
The flames reaching 15 feet high could be seen from the street on Wednesday, and Lopez says she could feel the heat as it cracked her bedroom window and melted a second-floor AC unit.
“There was a housefire in this neighborhood and a couple of garbage fires and the Mark’s Garden on Ventura Boulevard all were set on fire in the same night,” said one neighbor.
Lopez says she hopes a fire narrowly missing a power line next to several homes gets more attention from police and city officials.
“If there is a serial arsonist in this neighborhood, we need to know,” said Lopez. “Someone needs to be apprehended and taken off the street.”
Lopez says she doesn’t have any footage to show police and she’s asking for the public’s help – encouraging anyone who may have heard or seen something to come forward.
