(KRON) — Homeward Bound of Marin, the county’s provider of shelter and supportive housing for unhoused families, announced Wednesday that it received a $2.5 million grant from Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez through the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund.
“We are honored to be selected for Bezos Day 1 Families Fund support. Housing for everyone — children and their families in particular — is a basic human right,” said Paul Fordham, CEO of Homeward Bound of Marin.
Bezos founded e-commerce giant Amazon and has a net worth of $218 billion, according to Forbes magazine. His donation will help reduce the number of unhoused families in Marin.
Grant funding will also bolster services at Homeward Bound’s Family Center shelter, expand supportive housing, and help families seeking employment.
Last year, Homeward Bound served 245 parents and children in shelter and housing programs. Of those who left, 81 percent transitioned into permanent housing. The organization said its goal is to ensure that no child sleeps outside.
“This investment will not only provide critical resources but will also allow Homeward Bound of Marin to be innovative when offering services to end family homelessness,” said Anna Hurtado, chief program officer for Homeward Bound of Marin.
Family homelessness in the U.S. rose dramatically from 2022 to 2023, and families now represent more than 28 percent of the country’s homeless population, according to a 2024 report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness.
