(KRON) — Oakland rapper Saafir died Tuesday morning, his family said. Saafir was an influential figure in the Bay Area hip-hop scene in the 1990s and worked with artists such as Tupac.
Rapper Xzibit, who rapped alongside Saafir in the group Golden State Project, posted about his friend’s death on Instagram.
“I can’t believe I’m writing this right now, but don’t know what else to do at the moment. Approximately at 8:45am this morning, my brother Reggie known to the world as Saafir passed away. We have so much history I can’t even explain what I’m feeling right now. We surrounded him and let him know how much we loved him. He can rest now,” he said.
Born Reggie Gibson, Saafir got into the Bay Area hip-hop scene in the 1990s and at one point lived with Tupac.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Saafir was incarcerated for a parole violation in 2003 and converted to Islam.
A cause of death for Saafir has not been released, but he had dealt with health concerns including spinal cancer.
