The Mater Dei and Santa Margarita girls volleyball teams are one win away from playing in the CIF State Championships finals.
Both teams play CIF Southern California Regional finals today (Nov. 19) at 6 p.m.
Mater Dei, CIF Southern Section Division 1 champion, plays at Cathedral Catholic in San Diego in the CIF SoCal Regional Open Division final. Mater Dei is 37-4. Cathedral Catholic is 44-3 overall and 11-0 at home.
Mater Dei lost to Cathedral Catholic 2-1 in the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament final at Edison High in September. Mater Dei did not yet have sophomore outside hitter Westley Matavao, the only non-senior on last season’s All-Orange County first team. She transferred to Mater Dei from Orange Lutheran, did not make the change of change of residence that would have granted here immediate athletic eligibility so she had to sit out the first half of the season.
Mater Dei beat Cathedral Catholic last season in the CIF Southern California Regional Open Division final before beating Archbishop Mitty of San Jose in the CIF State Open Division championship match.
Santa Margarita (24-14-1) plays at Palos Verdes in the SoCal Regional Division 1 final. Santa Margarita lost to Palos Verdes 3-1 in the CIF-SS Division 2 semifinals.
The CIF State girls volleyball championships are Friday and Saturday at Santiago Canyon College in Orange. The Open Division final is Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Division 1 final is Friday at 6:30 p.m.
