(KRON) — A man who was attempting to clear a large branch from a roadway was struck and killed Monday night, according to the San Jose Police Department. SJPD officers responded at around 8:44 p.m. to the area of Bird and Hull avenues on a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision.
According to police, a preliminary investigation revealed that a 2019 red Chevy Tahoe pickup truck driven by a man was traveling north Bird Avenue when it hit a man in the roadway. The man, police said, was clearing a large branch from the road at the time.
The man who was struck was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
In the collision, the driver of the Chevy Tahoe also struck the tree branch. He left the scene to seek treatment for non-life threatening injuries related to the crash. According to police, he was not aware that he had struck the man in the roadway.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash, police said.
The incident marked San Jose’s 45th fatal collision and 45th traffic death of 2024. It was also the city’s 18th pedestrian death.
Police said the identity of the victim will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office.
