(KRON) — Four of 13 Richmond tobacco retailers that were randomly inspected in a code enforcement operation were found to have illegal drugs that were packaged and ready for sale, the Richmond Police Department (RPD) announced Wednesday.
The inspections took place over the past three weeks and involved Richmond PD detectives and code enforcement officers. Police seized over 7 pounds of marijuana that “were in leaf, powder, and liquid forms,” RPD said. Additionally, a “sizeable quantity” of psychedelic mushrooms and psychedelic mushroom-laced chocolate bars and candy gummies were seized in the operation.
Authorities did not disclose which locations were inspected or which had the illegal products.
Retailers face criminal charges, fines and business closures through administrative action if caught engaged in illegal drug sales. “Whether it’s illegal substances or unlicensed sales, we will continue to hold those who attempt to skirt the law accountable,” police said.
