(KRON) — A major route along the San Mateo County coast will be fully shut down Wednesday evening as the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) conducts an annual emergency response drill, the agency announced.
Both northbound and southbound directions of Highway 1 will be closed at the Tom Lantos Tunnels in the Devil’s Slide area for the mandatory drill. The closure will be in place from 8 p.m. Wednesday through 4 a.m. Thursday. The overnight closure is necessary “for the safety of the crews and the public,” Caltrans said.
Motorists north of the tunnel in Pacifica are advised to take Highway 1 north to use southbound Interstate 280. Those south of the tunnel to Half Moon Bay are advised to take Highway 92 east to northbound I-280.
California Highway Patrol officers will be positioned at the road closures to assist motorists.
The emergency response drill will include testing fire suppression and communications systems, exercising different scenarios and developing multi-agency coordination.
Agencies participating in the emergency response drill include CHP, Office of the State Fire Marshal, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, Pacifica Fire and Police departments, California Office of Emergency Services, CalFire and other first responders, according to Caltrans.
