Former NASA chief of staff and political newcomer, George Whitesides, a Democrat, is set to represent northern Los Angeles County in Congress in 2025 after defeating Republican Rep. Mike Garcia, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The race to represent California’s 27th Congressional District had been one of the hardest fought House races this election.
Whitesides, a former chief executive of Virgin Galactic, lent his own campaign more than $1 million during the campaign and was able to eke out a narrow victory at a time when much of American politics moved to the right.
“It’s the honor of a lifetime to be selected to serve our district in Congress and deliver for Santa Clarita, the Antelope Valley, and the San Fernando Valley,” Whitesides said in a Monday evening post to X, formerly Twitter.
Garcia, who has held the seat since 2020, was a Navy pilot and former executive with defense contractor Raytheon, conceded Monday evening, saying in a statement posted to social media:
“I will always seek to serve this wonderful nation in any capacity and remain at her disposal for the maintenance of her splendor, the security of her people and the protection of her future.”
The Republican added that he spoke with Whitesides earlier this evening, congratulated him and promised a smooth handoff of constituent case work.
