SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Dean Preston, a self-described “Democratic Socialist,” appears to have been defeated in his bid to be reelected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. On Sunday, Preston posted a statement to his Instagram account conceding the District 5 supervisor’s race.
“I’ve spent a lifetime fighting for underdogs, often against the odds,” Preston wrote. “I wouldn’t change a minute of it. We can’t win every battle, but we’ll continue the fight.”
Preston, a progressive, was endorsed by Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi in his effort to retain his seat. Preston was first elected in 2019 and during his time in office he frequently clashed with Elon Musk.
In 2023, the billionaire Tesla CEO and X owner vowed to spend as much as $100,000 to oust Preston and once tweeted that he “should go to prison.”
Preston was edged out in the race by political newcomer Bilal Mahmood. Mahmood, a startup founder who was endorsed by the San Francisco Chronicle, received 53% of the vote to Preston’s 47%, according to the city’s election results page.
