A small business in Walnut is asking for help and support from its community after being hit by three smash-and-grabs within a span of 10 days.
The first of three burglaries that staff believe were committed by the same suspect happened in the early morning hours of Halloween.
Security footage captured a masked man on a bike roll up to The Curry Pizza Company in the 300 block of South Lemon Avenue and throw what appears to be a rock at the front door.
Staff said the suspect made his way inside, jumped the counter and grabbed what he could from the register. He made off with $400 in this first hit.
On another day, the suspect appears to take out a crowbar and break through the glass door before smashing the register.
MP Singh, The Curry Pizza Company manager, said they decided to move money away from the register, but that didn’t stop the suspect from committing a third burglary.
“When he comes in, he sees an empty register, so he knows there’s nothing for him,” said Singh. “He came in to look for something else.”
The suspect concealed his identity in each instance, covering part of his face.
Singh believes the man is an unhoused individual from the area who they’ve been giving leftovers to. He reportedly has threatened some employees in the past, even showing up with a BB gun.
No arrests have been made, and the staff is saying repair costs are adding up.
It costs around $700 to fix the broken door each time, which Singh said isn’t covered by insurance.
“Our employees are calling off, they just want to be safe at home they don’t feel safe here,” said the business manager. “We just want the Walnut community’s help to support us – whatever they can to keep our business alive.”
