The Garden Grove City Council will have a major shake-up post election with a new mayor and three new councilmembers joining the dais.
With zero incumbents on the ballot, the council will have some new faces representing Districts 2, 5 and 6 after results are tallied now that polls have closed on this election. Also, longtime Mayor Steve Jones has reached the limit for terms leading on the dais.

Mayor
Initial ballot returns had former councilmember Diedre Thu-Ha Nguyen and current councilmember Stephanie Klophenstein in a tight race to become the city’s next mayor, distancing themselves from five other candidates.
District 2
In District 2, Phillip Nguyen had a sizeable early lead over John Ramirez. District 2 includes the northern section of Garden Grove, centered along Brookhurst Street, south to about Chapman Avenue. Nguyen said in his campaign statement that he is a long-time Garden Grove resident who runs a tax preparation business and teaches martial arts.
District 5
Yesenia Muneton and Sandy L. Thomas were in a close race in District 5, pulling ahead of Mariyan Bahadarakhann, in early results after the close of polls.
Muneton is a substitute teacher and Thomas is a retired bank manager.
The District 5 seat represents residents who live in the eastern part of Garden Grove, generally bounded by Orangewood Avenue on the north, Euclid Street on the west, Garden Grove Boulevard on the south and a small section that stretches east to Westminster Boulevard and Haster Street.
District 6
In District 6, Tri Lam had an early lead over Ariana Arestegui. Lam is a biomedical engineer and a business owner. Arestegui, a former campaign finance director, was elected in March to the Democratic Party of Orange County Central Committee, AD 70.
