Not all of Orange County’s playoff races in football were settled on the field Friday.

Two came down to coin flips.

The Alpha and Iota leagues turned to the exercise of chance to settle their ties and award automatic berths to the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

In the four-team Alpha League, which holds two automatic playoff spots, there was a three-way tie for second place between Edison (6-4, 1-2), Los Alamitos (5-5, 1-2) and San Clemente (5-5, 1-2). Edison won the flip to claim the guaranteed playoff entry along with league champion Mission Viejo (10-0, 3-0).

In the six-team Iota League, which offers three automatic playoff berths, there was a three-way tie for second place between El Toro (5-5, 3-2), Irvine (6-4, 3-2) and Sonora (6-4, 3-2). El Toro and Irvine won the coin flip for the second and third postseason spots, respectively, behind league champion Troy (9-1, 5-0).

The schools that lost the coin tosses will hope to make the playoff as at-large teams.

The playoff pairings will be announced Sunday at 10 a.m.
