Corona del Mar’s boys water polo team reached a milestone in its first victory of the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs on Friday.
The Sea Kings defeated visiting San Marcos 13-9 in Group D for their 100th postseason victory at the elite level in school history.
Corona del Mar, according to water polo historian Bill Prichard, first appeared in top level of the CIF-SS playoffs — now known as the Open Division — in 1963.
The Sea Kings (24-5) entered their match against San Marcos with an all-time record of 99-38 at the elite level, which has been known as Division 4A or Division 1 over the years.
Their 100 victories ranks second all-time to rival Newport Harbor, which has 134.
Corona del Mar, Prichard noted, has an additional 29 playoff victories in what is now known as Division 1, or Division 2 and 3A over the years.
Corona del Mar plays at Harvard-Westlake on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Group D final and a berth in the Open Division semifinals. The winner also automatically advances to the SoCal regional.
