The Diocese of Orange will play host this month to the Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, offering the county’s faithful the opportunity to visit the replica first at Christ Cathedral this weekend and then at several parish churches and even a local hospital.
The 4-by-6-foot digitally produced image is the same size and an exact copy of the original Guadalupe tilma, which church officials say dates to 1531. But the original is displayed above the main altar at the Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, a far journey for local residents.
The missionary image was authorized by the Catholic Church as an evangelizing tool, diocese spokesperson Bradley Zint said, and has been “associated with its own miraculous phenomenon.”
This high-resolution image was made in 1999 and has toured the country, though Zint said he believes it is the first visit to Orange County.
The image of the Virgin Mary will be available for veneration at Christ Cathedral through Monday and then will move to St. Thomas More in Irvine. It ends its tour of Orange County parishes at St. Vincent de Paul in Huntington Beach on Nov. 23 and 24. On Nov. 9, it will make a stop at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton.
