Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass congratulated the Dodgers on their World Series victory on Thursday and made sure to let her New York counterpart hear the noise.
“As soon as this press conference is over, I will be shipping a Dodgers jersey to my colleague in New York, Mayor [Eric] Adams,” she said on Thursday. “Because he has lost the bet.”
Due to a bet made between the mayors of the two largest cities in the U.S., Adams will have to wear a Dodgers jersey to work in the coming days.
The Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees 7-6 on Wednesday night to clinch the World Series title in five games.
“On behalf of the entire city, I want to express our pride and heartfelt congratulations to the Dodgers, to the players and to their families, the coaches, the trainers, the front office and everyone who had a hand in making history last night,” Bass said in a news conference Thursday. “Every night, each of you exemplified the very best of our city and put greatness on display.”
While there were arrests and instances of unruly behavior on the streets of L.A. Wednesday night, Bass acknowledged that most fans celebrated in peace.
“The overwhelming majority of the celebrations were joyful and peaceful,” Bass said. “I want to thank the many Angelenos who celebrated peacefully.
Bass then spoke about the Dodgers’ celebrations planned for Friday, which coincidentally falls on what would’ve been the 64th birthday of the late Fernando Valenzuela.
The mayor mentioned that restaurants and shops along the Dodgers’ parade route downtown will be open on Friday and urged those attending the parade to spend money at local businesses.
“When you are downtown watching the parade or participating in the celebrations, make sure you go to a restaurant or go to a local shop and patronize them,” she said. “Spend some money downtown.”
