History of Balboa Island pieced together in giant mural

Take a blank wall, a grassroots effort and add in 360,000 glass tiles and the result is a mural depicting the history of Balboa Island.

The mural, on the south-facing side of the island’s Irvine Ranch Market, started as an idea about four years ago.

On Sunday, a group of local residents unveiled the 10-by-56-foot mural that tells part of the story of the Newport Beach island.

Panels depict the ferry, Fire Station #4 and the island’s famed frozen banana stands among others.

Local artist Barbara Abbott used photos from the historical society as the basis for the seven panels.

Visitors can scan QR codes next to the mural to get the full story of each scene.

Lee Pearl, a local organizer for the project, said glass tiles were used instead of paint to make it more durable.

Visitors can see the mural at the corner of Marine and Park avenues on Balboa Island.
