A member of the California State Assembly announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer ahead of his Nov. 5 reelection bid, though it shouldn’t impact his ability to serve in the Legislature.
Assemblyman Rick Chavez Zbur, 51st District, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, though he noted it was caught early and in those cases, “the likelihood of survival is almost 100%,” as reported by the Beverly Press.
Zbur’s 51st District contains a large swath of Los Angeles County, including Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica.
Zbur, who was first elected in 2022 and is running for another two-year term, said he expects to begin treatment soon after the Nov. 5 election, in which he faces Republican Stephan Hohil.
“Mine is progressed enough that I need treatment soon, but it’s not advanced,” he said. “I’ve narrowed it down to two [options]. And in both cases, the treatment should be something that I can do right after the election, literally the week right after, and then should hopefully be recovered by the time I have to start going back to Sacramento in early December.”
