(KRON) — A prominent Oakland family now finds itself in an unusual position — needing help — after the fire in the Oakland Hills Friday afternoon badly damaged their longtime home.
Delane and Jerry Sims have lived there for 30 years and raised nine kids there.
Jerry was asleep at home when the fire started along I-580, jumped the street and ignited their house. He made it out, and that’s what Delane and their kids are most thankful for, but it’s been tough.

The couple is staying in a hotel until they find longer-term housing. It’s expected it’ll take a year to rebuild their home.
