The International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame celebrates 25 years

The International Surfboard Builders Hall of Fame celebrated 25 years on Saturday, Oct. 19, with the induction of several crafters who have helped countless surfers catch waves.

Six surfboard makers were honored in the celebration at the plaza on the north side of the Huntington Beach Pier, which also included performances by dancers as part of the Polynesian Festival kicking off the event.

The honorees include: Channel Island Surfboards Al Merrick, Ricky Carroll of Ricky Carroll Surfboards, Richard Deese from South Bay Surf Shop, Al Faas from Allen Surfboards, Cher Pendarvis from Pendoflex Surfboards, the first woman inductee, and Sam Eagan from Sam Surfboards Australia.

The Hall of Fame was created in 2000 by Bob “The Greek” Bolen and Mike “Micky Rat” Ester to honor the builders and creators of the surfboard industry.

Since its founding, more than 100 board builders from around the world have been recognized.

Bolen and Ester created the awards, they have said, because surfers who dedicate themselves to the art of building surfboards are rarely honored.
