Football roundup: Aliso Niguel upsets Laguna Beach; Capistrano Valley, Villa Park and Huntington Beach also win in Week 8

Aliso Niguel snapped a two-game losing streak with a 34-14 upset win over Laguna Beach in a Foxtrot League game Friday at Aliso Niguel High.

Laguna Beach (7-1, 2-1) was previously undefeated and ranked No. 24 in the Register’s Top 25 poll. Aliso Niguel (5-3, 1-2) was unranked.

Jarett Sabol, a USC commit for baseball, ran for 195 yards on 31 carries with two touchdowns and had a 51-yard reception. The Wolverines ran for 282 yards as a team and Jacob Denes had a 48-yard touchdown run.

Carter Vestermark threw for 137 yards with two touchdown receptions. Cameron Levine and FInley Torrico had touchdown catches for the Wolverines.

Minnesota commit Jackson Kollock completed 10 of 26 passes for 98 yards with a touchdown for Laguna Beach. Wyatt Bogdan had a touchdown reception and Declan Murray ran for a touchdown.

In other games Friday:

In the Foxtrot League:

Orange 10, Northwood 6: Malahki Allen threw a game-winning, 43-yard touchdown pass to Gianni Porfilio with under five minutes left in the game against Northwood.

Christopher Cervantes made a 42-yard field goal for Orange (2-6, 2-1) in the third quarter.

Joseph Harper ran for a touchdown for Northwood (6-2, 1-2).

Dana Hills 42, Fountain Valley 24: Vanden Dugger threw four touchdown passes for Dana Hills in a win over Fountain Valley.

Dana Hills (8-0, 3-0) trailed 17-14 at halftime. James Leicester and Charlie Eckl each had two touchdown receptions for the Dolphins.

Radley Geiss had two touchdown runs for Dana Hills.

In the Iota League:

Troy 58, Canyon 23: Rudy Alcala threw five touchdown passes for Troy in a win over Canyon.

The senior threw for 150 yards and threw touchdowns to four different receivers. Vander Ploog had 93 yards receiving with two touchdowns. Kellen Watts, Andrew Green and Ethan Mundt also had touchdown catches.

Troy (7-1, 3-0) ran for 319 yards and three touchdowns. Mundt led the rushing attack with 159 yards and two touchdowns. Fadi El Helou ran for 51 yards with a touchdown.

In the Kappa League:

Esperanza 35, St. Margaret’s 7: Travis Frazier threw three touchdown passes for Esperanza.

Eddie Matthews, Coen Ali and Edward Khutshivili had touchdown receptions for Esperanza (5-3, 2-1). Elias Rodriguez and Ezayis Norton ran for touchdowns.

Matthews also had an interception for the Aztecs.

In the Omicron League:

Portola 31, University 6: Portola ran for 380 yards and four touchdowns in a win over University.

Timothy Grettenberg ran for 214 yards with four touchdowns for Portola (3-5, 3-0). Diego Reyna added 106 yards rushing.

Maxwell Mapstone led Portola’s defense with 11 tackles and Farouk Merzougui had a sack.

Jake Rabold made two field goals for University (3-5, 0-3) and Carl Oldham had an interception.

In the Sigma League:

Calvary Chapel 40, Ocean View 6: Matt Peters had four touchdowns for Calvary Chapel in a rout of Ocean View.

The senior threw two touchdown passes, ran for a touchdown and had a 75-yard punt return. Peters also added an interception on defense.

Jorge Brito had two receiving touchdowns for Calvary Chapel (3-5, 2-1).

In the Bravo League:

Yorba Linda 37, Tesoro 10: The visiting Mustangs (7-1, 2-1) scored 23 points in the first quarter as they bounced back from a loss to first-place San Juan Hills (7-1, 3-0).

Junior Vaughn Steinert completed 14 of 25 passes for a season-high 203 yards and a touchdown for Tesoro (3-5, 0-3).

Tesoro starting quarterback Cash O’Byrne (upper body injury) is out for the season, Titans coach Mike Zangl said on Saturday.

Villa Park 28, Corona del Mar 14: Quarterback Nate Lewis rushed for three touchdowns as the Spartans (6-2, 2-1) scored all 28 of their points in the second half at Newport Harbor High.

Corona del Mar fell to 3-5 overall, 0-3 in league.

In the Delta League:

Capistrano Valley 49, Trabuco Hills 41: Tommy Acosta completed 18 of 23 passes for 240 yards and three TDs and rushed 21 times for 106 yards and three scores as the visiting Cougars (7-1, 3-0) remained tied for first place with Tustin (7-1, 3-0).

Reily Walker added 106 yards rushing and a score for Capistrano Valley, which plays host to El Modena (7-1, 2-1) next week.

Capistrano Valley’s Kaden Hunter caught two TDs.

The Cougars led 49-34 and recovered a late pooch kick to run out the clock.

Tristan Zale threw for a season-high 351 yards and four touchdowns to pace the Mustangs (4-4, 0-3).

Alex Kiernan hauled in eight passes for season-high 187 yards.

In the Epsilon League:

Huntington Beach 43, Foothill 29: Brady Edmunds passed for 414 yards and five TDs and also rushed for a score as the Oilers (5-3, 2-1) outscored the Knights 21-7 in the second half at Tustin High.

Troy Foster added 10 catches for 213 yards and four touchdowns for the Oilers, who rebounded for a loss to La Habra.

Foothill dropped to 4-4 overall, 1-2 in league.

El Dorado 27, Laguna Hills 25: The host Golden Hawks (3-5, 1-2) rallied in the second half to notch their first league victory. Laguna Hills (3-5, 0-3) led 10-7 at intermission before El Dorado scored 20 points in the final two quarters.

In the Ironwood League:

Capistrano Valley Christian 33, Ontario Christian 30: Nate Richie scored on a short run in the final minute to lift the visiting Cougars (4-4, 1-2) to their first league victory.

Max Krosky had 19 total tackles for Capistrano Valley Christian.

The Eagles play host to first place Aquinas (6-2, 3-0) at JSerra next week before closing at Heritage Christian of Northridge (4-4, 0-3).
